There is no need to struggle with lower back pain, achy knees or painful hips and ankles!
My 6-week remedial yoga course is aimed at improving mobility in all the joints of the lower body, as well as build strength in the lower back and core to reduce back pain.
Why do we wait until we get injured before we give our bodies the care and attention they deserve?
Since I tore my hamstring a couple of years ago, I have become intensely aware of the long path of progress and injury recovery. The hamstring injury affected my hip, knee and sacro-iliac area. My balance was effected, and strangely my shoulder on the opposing side started to play up. It totally changed the way in which I approach both my yoga practice and my running. Most importantly, it made me realise that I am not infallible. This one body has to last me a long time yet, and the realisation made me recalibrate how I treat my body and take care of it as it changes, grows, develops (Yes, even at my ripe old age!) and improves.
My injury also made me even more aware of the many broken bodies around me as I practice and teach yoga. I see so many sports people who “work through the pain” of aching ankles, knees and hips as they continue to stretch and challenge their bodies. I notice achy bottoms and stiff lower backs, painful ITB’s and achilles tendons, weak arches and toes on feet that translate into knee injuries. Misaligned hips, postural imbalances, quadricep dominance, overly tight hamstrings, weak inner thighs and shins will inhibit performance, and ultimately reflect in lower back pain.
Everything that goes on in the legs, from the feet upwards, can ultimately end in lower back pain. From a pain in the butt or sciatica (Due most frequently to overtight piriformis muscles) to real discomfort in the lumbar and SI area, through to eventually even slipped discs due to constant overuse and repetitive strain. This comes from a myriad of reasons: Muscular imbalances, weakness or over-development in opposing muscle groups, or not taking enough recovery time between injuries or peak activity events.
My 6-week sports yoga rehab course was developed to deal with this specifically.
Whether you use your body for work or for sports, taking time to heal, recover and rebuild strength is crucial to continuing performance. This course will help you to develop new, healthier movement patterns starting with the very basics and slowly rebuilding helthy alignment from the feet up.
I limit the class size to only 10 people, so that each person can get the maximum benefit of dealing with their own individual problem. We will use a wide range of props during a mixture of passive stretching, active and passive yoga postures and somatic movement.
Together, we will also develop your own individual yoga homework practice to help you sustain the benefits.
I will also be running a rotation of 6-weekly remedial yoga programs, followed by a 2-week break at the end of every rotation. These will take place on Friday evenings in the cool studio at Bikram Yoga Fleet. The cost of the full 6-week program, including home practice assignments, is £125-00.
In addition, there will be quarterly 1-day workshops running at The Studio @ Durham House in Farnham. These will be designed to support the 6-week course, but also to give patients who are not on the 6-week course the opportunity to experienced alignment based yoga for pain relief.
The one day course will be presented on the following Saturdays:
- 25th March
- 24th June
- 30th September
- 16th December
